My Little Sleuth

Yesterday after school I took a look at the news and noted that there had been a bomb scare at the high school down the street. I tucked that in the back of my mind and moved on. Later in the evening Olivia mentions that "all of the high school students came to her school today!" (the high school and elementary schools are a few blocks from one another). She noted they came over "because of an emergency".

My thought was it was better to get this all in the open and maybe have "teaching moment". Olivia, Emma, and I discussed the event and why on earth someone would do that (because the kids were naughty, of course).

Olivia had many other questions including: "what happens if you get caught?" - you will get kicked out of school. "How will the person get caught" - um, maybe check phone records or do something fancy on the computer to track the person down. She's 6 - she bought that, except she had her own theory... "...or they could wait to see who would be the only person who didn't evacuate the school. The person who was left would have called in the bomb threat." Of course - if you knew there really wasn't a bomb, why would you bother to leave school?? Except, I explained, that it was possible that the kid skipped school that day anyway. Olivia had this all thought out - "Oh, no, he wouldn't do that - you would *really* get kicked out of school if you skipped."

I thought it would be wise to let her to continue to think that skipping school was up there with threatening bodily harm to your classmates. You can never be too careful with her.

Finally

So, I love telling stories about my kids - they are funny, clever and smart. The stories are all amazing (of course). Ok, so maybe everyone is humoring me, but I keep getting told that I "should write these things down".

Every parent thinks that all the time. I know I always think that I will remember the amazing comments and insights shared by the girls. I often cannot even remember why I walked into a room, so, in reality, I am not confident I will remember all of these other details.

So.... I am finally going to write these things down.

I hope everyone gets as much enjoyment from these stories as I do.
